Dear Parents and Students, we have finally come to the last lap in preparing for PSLE. It has been a long and enduring race since the beginning of the year. Those who have gone through or prepared your child for PSLE know that it is not an easy journey.
Continue to press on and not give up at this critical juncture. You deserve a pat on the shoulder for the endurance and effort shown thus far!
In this article, I will share with you 4 important tips as to what students should do for the remaining weeks before PSLE.
Tip 1 - Set a Timetable for Revision
List out all the topics and skills (if applicable) for each subject and plan a daily timetable all the way till PSLE.
Factor in the day when you have supplementary classes and might not have much time to revise. Plan accordingly.
If possible, also plan the timing or duration in which you want to cover for specific topics to check if you are on target.
A schedule that is set realistically and properly will ensure that you can finish at least one round of revision for each subject.
It might be good for parents to plan a detailed and realistic study schedule together with their children.
Tip 2 – Strategise and Prioritise
Depending on your progress and ability, if you are not able to complete one round of revision, you have to strategise and prioritise on revising for topics that have heavier weighting or are more critical compared to other “smaller” topics.
Check with your teachers who will be able to advise you on topics and/or skills that are more crucial compared to the others.
Spend more time revising more important or crucial topics/skills.
Tip 3 – Write your own Notes
Summarise important pointers or concepts for each topic/items in each subject using mindmaps or in sentences.
Jot down careless mistakes or pitfalls that you are prone to in your notes to serve as reminders.
In fact, make it a daily habit to highlight question number in each worksheet that you have problems with.
You can also include different question types in your personal notes that you always get wrong in each worksheet or test papers, etc.
For example, when you always can’t handle a question type involving a certain Math strategy, write down the question number of the worksheet in your notes.
The next time when you want to revise, you can revise faster just by looking through certain questions in that particular worksheet without having to look through all questions again.
Read your own notes for revision and you can revise many times over than going through the whole stack of notes or worksheets.
Tip 4 – Quick Snap Revision
To save time in these remaining few weeks, you can quickly go through questions previously done wrongly by just going through the first few steps or process without working out the actual answers.
Go through each question mentally before referring to the actual solution. The crux in quick snap revision is to be able to identify the concepts needed to solve different questions.
The focus is more on conceptual and procedural fluency and not on accuracy of final answers.
Conclusion
Though PSLE is a high-stake examination, your health and emotional well-being are also very important. Remember to include some relaxation and exercising slots in your study schedule.
Parents can play a crucial role by assuring and showering your child with love and concern during this stressful period.
As long as your child has tried his best, let your child know that his self-worth or your love for him is not determined by his PSLE results.
