Your child has received the PSLE results. No matter what the results are, whether they meet your expectations or not, do give your child a BIG HUG to assure him/her that his/her self-worth is not determined by PSLE results!
The last thing you can do on PSLE results release day is to scold or demoralise him further. After all, your child is still only a 12-year-old kid. Celebrate the efforts that your child had put in or resilience that he had shown!
PSLE does not and will not determine your child's future success in life. Life is definitely more than academic success and there are still different educational pathways that will help your child to fulfil his potential.
As a parent myself, I do acknowledge the expectations and disappointments a parent has towards his child. Do give yourself some time to let reality sinks in and after that, think carefully and discuss with your child on the choices of secondary schools.
In this article, I am going to put down some key points of what you should take note of when participating in the S1 Posting Exercise.
Note that these key points do not apply to those who already got a place in a secondary school through DSA (except to make third language and/or course option based on PSLE results) or those who are going to enrol in specialised schools (Crest or Spectra Secondary School) for Normal (Technical) stream.
1. Choosing 6 Secondary Schools
Your child will receive a S1 option Form together with the PSLE results slip. This form allows you to submit a list of 6 secondary schools in order of preference via the S1 Internet System during the S1 option phase.
Use the S1 pin found at the top right-hand corner of the S1 Option Form to log into the system. I strongly recommend you to read the following article How to Choose a Secondary School After PSLE before submitting the S1 Option Form.
2. Eligibility Letter
Your child will receive an eligibility letter which is enclosed in the S1 Option Form.
This letter will inform you of the third language and/or course (Exp/NA or Na/NT) your child is eligible for. Make your choice through the S1 Internet System too.
3. Keying in Your Choices
Once you have made and are ready to key in your choices, you can log into the S1 Internet System (S1-IS) 24 hours starting from 11 am on the first day of PSLE results release date till 3 pm on the last day of S1 Option Phase which lasts for 7 days.
Do keep a copy of the Verification Slip after you have submitted your child's options through the S1-IS.
DO NOT wait till the last minute to key in the choices. The Internet might be down. You never know. Discuss and clarify earlier with all parties to avoid last minute decision and anxiety. For those students without internet at home, you can also choose to submit the S1 option form manually or log in the S1-IS in school.
4. School Posting Phase
After the S1 Option Phase will be the School Posting Phase. This phase allows students to be posted to secondary schools of their choices, based on merits, using their PSLE aggregates. No action is required on your part.
One thing to take note of is for a student who did not manage to get a place in any of the 6 choices, the student will be posted to a school with vacancies which is near to the student's residential address.
5. Posting Results Release Phase
After the School Posting Phase will be the Posting Results Release Phase. The results of the exercise are usually made known on the 3rd or 4th week of December.
You can check the posting results via SMS (if you have opted to be informed about results during the S1 option phase). Alternatively, you can also log in to S1 Internet System or go to your child's school to find out the results.
Your child can wear his/her school uniform and bring along his/her report book and PSLE results slip when reporting for registration at the secondary school. The date of registration is usually on the next day after the posting results is made known.
If you are not in town, you can appoint a proxy to register at the secondary school.
However, you should get ready the following documents:
- Proxy form completed by you
- You and your spouse's original NRICs
- Your child's original Birth Certificate
- Your appointed proxy's original NRIC
Conclusion
Life is bigger than PSLE results. There are many things in life that we can strive for. Academic excellence is but one of them. PSLE results will not and do not solely determine your child's success in life.
Involve your child in the decision on the choices of schools applied. Discuss and clarify earlier. Do not make last minute decision. It is important to choose a school that fits and can maximise your child's potential.
